genuinely one of the worst things that’s happened to television in the last few years (exacerbated by streaming services) is death of Filler. going from 20 episodes to 8 because “we didn’t really need that episode where the main characters went to the beach right? it had no long lasting effect” but we DID!!! we needed to see how they act without the Big Bad Plot and to establish the dynamics between the characters and lay in the sun (do they forget sunscreen? how do they react to a thieving seagull? do they get buried in the sand or do they do the burying?). the plot isn’t everything. the action doesn’t hit as hard without the quiet moments. give us character development and our little scenes back

The thing with using 🍇 instead of just saying rape is that if you really need to avoid censors you could use phrases that already exist like forced upon or violated or something else. 🍇 is genuinely the worse possible thing to use when talking about a serious topic and no I never want to see anyone use it when talking about something that happens in real life. It’s genuinely so stupid

artists fuck better because we turn sex into art, masterpieces, mattresses become canvases where we can paint our love to someone with bodies.

as an archivist I am begging you

  • put dates on everything
  • don’t believe digital stuff is preserved forever - if it’s really important (documents, photos, etc) print it out
  • name your files accurately I know it sucks but please
  • don’t destroy the original just bc you scanned it
  • rubber cement is the devil’s adhesive use photo corners and quit gluing shit
  • you will NOT remember write it down
  • if you staple things to the inside of a folder I will find you
  • your public library probably has equipment to digitize old media for free or can at least get you connected with somewhere that does!

disabled-dippy

My Disability Studies professor said something that I think was very good and explains a lot about professional attitudes toward people with disabilities. This is what she said:

“We [people with disabilities] are the last thing on the HR discrimination list. Companies always list things like, ‘we eliminate discrimination on the basis of gender, race, religion, nationality, identity… oh, and disability.’ It’s just tacked on at the end. The others are mostly about being nice, respectful, and treating people equally. Not discriminating against people with disabilities is more complicated. You need to change your environment, code, the way you design things. You actually need to make changes, and most companies do not want to do that.”

I thought this was a really good insight. We’re often thought about last, if we’re thought about at all. Accommodating us takes effort and a lot of people just don’t want to make the effort.

vacuously-true

I feel like this is only partially true. It's true that inclusion of disabled people requires work.

But inclusion of those other listed protected classes is not "mostly about being nice, respectful, equal." And that's why it's often not done well. Inclusion of those protected classes also requires changes in environment, policy, design. You may need to change scheduling policies to accommodate religious and cultural observances. You may need to change the way restrooms and locker rooms are set up to be inclusive of women and trans people. You may need to change harassment policies and workplace culture structures to make sure protected classes of people are supported. This is what the ideas of institutional racism and patriarchy are about. Just being nice isn't good enough, you have to change systems. You have to do work.

It's just that it's EASIER to get away with not doing the work and just saying you're inclusive when it comes to those other non-disabled protected classes. People think just not being mean is good enough. It's not, and that's why well meaning people can still contribute to racist and sexist systems, but people think it is enough. I think it's just more CLEAR that inclusion of disabled people is work.

Fun fact: This music video was released in July 1997. They had no obligation to make this in any way Halloween themed. The song probably isn’t on many Halloween playlists. But the Backstreet Boys wanted to do it this way, and had to fight the record label about it.
